How WhatsApp text formatting works

WhatsApp does not have a font menu. Instead, it reads simple symbols around your words: *stars* make text bold, _underscores_ make it italic, ~tildes~ strike it through and three backticks make it monospace. The symbols disappear once the message is sent.

This formatter adds the symbols for you and shows a live preview, so you do not have to remember them or check the result by sending the message to yourself first.

How to use the formatter

   Write or paste your message

   Type in the box above, or paste a message you already have.

   Select the words to style

   Highlight a word or line, then press Bold, Italic, Strike or Mono. With nothing selected, a placeholder is added for you to type over.

   Check the preview

   The green bubble shows the message the way it appears in a chat.

   Copy and send

   Press Copy and paste the text into WhatsApp, a broadcast, or your bulk message.

When formatting helps

• Shop offers: put the price or discount in *bold* so it is seen at a glance.

• Wedding invitations: the couple’s names in bold, the date and venue on their own lines.

• Coaching and school notices: dates and amounts in bold, changed timings shown with ~strikethrough~.

• Real estate listings: a bulleted list of size, price and location reads far better than one long line.

Tips

• Do not format everything – one or two bold words stand out, a whole bold paragraph does not.

• There must be no space just inside the symbols: *sale* works, * sale * does not.

• Formatting also works in messages sent with Rapid Sender, including with {{name}} inside bold text.
